Lorenzo: Acosta has something 99% of riders don't
Five-time world champion Jorge Lorenzo praised Pedro Acosta's Austrian Grand Prix win, which ended KTM's more than three-year winless streak. Lorenzo highlighted the young Spaniard's exceptional mental qualities and maturity.
Pedro Acosta's victory at the Red Bull Ring ended a 1,071-day winless run for KTM and returned the manufacturer to the top step of the MotoGP podium for the first time in four years. Commenting on the performance for DAZN, five-time world champion Jorge Lorenzo called the achievement almost a miracle in motorsport.
Lorenzo stressed that winning with a technically inferior motorcycle is only possible when a rider possesses something extraordinary — a quality most competitors simply lack. He also recalled Acosta's debut season in Moto3, when the rider won a race after starting from pit lane, an achievement no one else in the sport has matched.
An imperfect start, but real maturity
Lorenzo noted that Acosta's start in Austria was not perfect, with the front wheel lifting and other issues arising. Despite this, the rider stayed calm and patient, avoiding mistakes that could have cost him the lead.
An unpredictable championship
Discussing the wider championship picture, Lorenzo admitted that predicting MotoGP outcomes is practically impossible. Mistakes and injuries can drastically reshape the standings — before the Austrian race, many expected Marc Marquez to win comfortably, yet Jorge Martin has also returned to strong form.
On KTM's progress at a track traditionally favorable to Italian manufacturers, Lorenzo pointed out that Brad Binder's close finish behind Marquez, in a session usually dominated by Ducati, shows KTM's moment has finally arrived after four winless years.
Looking ahead, Lorenzo predicted that while Marquez and Martin remain the leading title contenders, Acosta will be a constant factor in many upcoming races and that this win will further shake up the championship fight.
