University of Latvia rector Gundars Berziņš says a growing number of students have voluntarily completed the State Defence Service (VAD), earning the right to study for free, with their academic performance matching that of other students.

In an interview with the Latvian Television programme "Rīta Panorāma," University of Latvia (LU) rector Gundars Berziņš said the number of students who have completed the voluntary State Defence Service (VAD) is growing, giving them the opportunity to study at the university free of charge.

Berziņš noted that most of these students perform well academically, with their results not differing from those of other students who did not go through the service.

The rector's comments suggest that the option of obtaining free higher education after completing defense service is becoming increasingly popular among young people, and that participation in the service does not hinder their ability to succeed academically.
