Latvian State Roads urges drivers to prepare for heavier traffic as new school year begins
State enterprise Latvian State Roads (LVC) is urging drivers to expect heavier traffic and more children on the streets as the new school year starts. Special caution is advised near schools and in Ikšķile and Ulbroka, where road repairs are underway.
As the new school year approaches, state enterprise Latvijas valsts ceļi (LVC) is urging drivers to plan extra time for their daily trips and to set off earlier, given that traffic — especially in suburban areas — will become busier. Starting September 1, more children will be out on streets and roads, and school buses will resume their routes.
LVC is calling on all road users to observe traffic rules, including speed limits and other restrictions near schools, and to be especially careful during the first days of the new school year, when children return to their studies after the summer break.
A reminder for children too
Children are also encouraged to refresh their knowledge of traffic rules before heading back to school. New pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure has been built in many towns and areas near cities, which students can use on their way to school. To ensure safety, children need to know how to use this infrastructure correctly and to be mindful of their own safety as well as that of other road users.
Repairs in Ikšķile and Ulbroka
LVC notes that road repair works are currently underway near schools in Ikšķile and Ulbroka, so parents and drivers in these areas should expect traffic to be notably slower.
