M-Sport starts testing kit for its 2027 rally car
British team M-Sport, which competes in the World Rally Championship (WRC), has tried out its version of the FIA-designed kit that turns Rally2 cars into the new top class. Former WRC driver Matthew Wilson drove it.
M-Sport, a team in the World Rally Championship (WRC), has begun practical testing of the new car kit that will mark the transition to revised championship rules in 2027. Former WRC driver Matthew Wilson, son of M-Sport founder Malcolm Wilson, was behind the wheel.
What is changing in the championship
Significant changes are expected in the WRC next season: the current top-class Rally1 cars will give way to a new top class. To make the transition easier, the International Automobile Federation (FIA) developed a special conversion kit for existing Rally2 cars. The kit improves their aerodynamics and overall performance.
Requirements for manufacturers
Cars fitted with the kit will be allowed to compete in the 2027 and 2028 seasons. Each manufacturer that homologates the kit, meaning officially registers it for competition, must enter every WRC round with at least two cars.
M-Sport's plans
Immediately after the rules were announced, M-Sport confirmed its intention to develop its own version of the kit. The team has now tried it in practice, with Matthew Wilson as the test driver.
