School Learning Materials May Lose Funding Next Year as Ministry Finds No Extra Money
Latvia's Ministry of Education and Science admits it has still not found extra money to prevent a cut in funding for pupils' learning materials next year. The per-pupil sum could fall from 35.20 to 21.80 euros a year.

Latvia's Ministry of Education and Science (IZM) has acknowledged that it has still not found additional money to prevent a cut in state funding for pupils' learning materials next year. At present the state allocates 35.20 euros per pupil per year for such materials, but next year the amount could drop to 21.80 euros, a reduction of 13.40 euros.
What is being demanded
In the summer, a teachers' trade union called on the authorities to find money for purchasing learning materials. More than 5,500 parents of schoolchildren have made a similar demand on a public initiatives portal.
The ministry's response
The ministry says it will try to address the problem with the support of European Union funds. Which specific funds and what amounts might be used has not been specified. For now, it remains unclear whether the per-pupil funding will be kept at its current level next year or will indeed be reduced.
