Journalist Madis Hindre has sharply criticized the mutual accusations among political parties following President Alar Karis's announcement that he will not seek re-election. In an interview with ETV's "Aktuaalne Kaamera," he called the blame game insulting.

Hindre noted that leaders of the Centre Party and Isamaa accused coalition parties of tarnishing Karis's name, while Prime Minister Kristen Michal described Isamaa's support as a "Judas kiss." However, Hindre emphasized that Karis is an independent political actor.

He highlighted the risk that a campaign could have damaged Karis's reputation, citing the 2006 elections where Arnold Rüütel was portrayed as a retrograde figure, a label he could never shake off.

Hindre stated that Karis's decision has significantly altered parties' plans. The Social Democrats' chance to field Sven Mikser or Marina Kaljurand as a unified liberal candidate has diminished because the Reform Party no longer needs to choose from them. Similarly, Eesti 200's prospects have declined as the Reform Party can now negotiate with everyone.

The journalist added that future developments depend on whether the election becomes a political game. If Urmas Reinsalu and Mihhail Kõlvart try to show that Michal is not up to the task, the situation will become more complex. Much will also depend on which candidate the Reform Party proposes to Isamaa and the Centre Party.
