The 28th Guitarists' Session has ended in Madona, Latvia, after five days. The event brings young guitar players together with experienced masters. At the closing concert, a joint choir of participants and masters performed “Čiekuri” (“Pine Cones”), a song by Reigani, a side project of the Latvian band Prāta Vētra. The audience responded with loud ovations.

The concert host, Kristaps Rasins, who took part in the Guitarists' Session himself in the past, used the song's image as a comparison. Just as a mighty forest grows from a small cone, young talents can in time grow into outstanding stage performers.

An example from the session's past

As an example, Rasins mentioned guitarist Matīss Čudars. When Rasins was a participant, the thirteen-year-old Matīss turned up in his room. He had lost his lunch vouchers and was ready to make do with rye bread alone.

Today Čudars is one of the most versatile and active performing jazz guitarists in Latvia. He studied at the Riga Cathedral Choir School and the Amsterdam Conservatory, and he increasingly makes his mark in original creative work as well.

Hopes for the new participants

The article expresses confidence that this year's participants could also reach similar heights. Not all of them will become performing musicians, but someone will surely surprise audiences with their stage personality. In the words of the piece, great things begin with first steps, and great music with the first notes played.
