Estonia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Thursday that no Estonians were affected by a train disaster in Spain. On Wednesday morning, two high-speed trains collided south of the Spanish capital, Madrid. According to local authorities, at least 68 people were killed.

In a press release, the ministry said the Estonian Embassy in Madrid is in contact with the Spanish authorities. As matters stand, there are no reports of Estonians being injured or killed, and nobody has contacted the embassy asking for assistance.

Second crash on the same line

The accident happened nine months after another collision on the same railway line. That earlier crash also involved high-speed trains, and they were operated by the same companies as in this case. In the earlier collision, 46 people lost their lives.

The source does not give a cause for the latest crash, and it offers no further details about the injured or about any investigation. The Estonian Embassy in Madrid continues to work with the Spanish authorities, and the ministry has so far received no information about Estonian citizens among the victims.
