After the Kansas City Chiefs' first loss of the season, 20-3 to the Seattle Seahawks, Sky Sports NFL analysts highlighted Patrick Mahomes' competitiveness. They see it as one reason he ranks among the finest athletes of his generation.

In the NFL, the United States' top professional American football league, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes endured his team's first defeat of the season on Sunday night. The Chiefs, who had started the year unbeaten, lost 20-3 to the Seattle Seahawks, the reigning Super Bowl champions. Afterwards, Sky Sports NFL presenter Neil Reynolds and analyst Jeff Reinebold used the Inside the Huddle programme to praise what they called Mahomes' generational competitiveness.

The moment that stood out

In the third quarter, Mahomes fumbled after being hit by Seahawks defender Derick Hall. Reynolds described the ball rolling toward the sideline, Mahomes chasing it, being tripped by another defender, falling, getting up and diving in again, then disappearing under a pile of players and emerging with the ball. Reynolds said it gave the Chiefs energy for a spell, even though Seattle kicked a field goal. He said he had not seen a quarterback so eager to win a loose ball.

Reynolds also said he had watched Mahomes at Chiefs training camp several times, including sessions with no fans present, and that he competes constantly.

Comparison with basketball icons

Reinebold likened Mahomes' mindset to that of NBA stars Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan. In his view, the will to win matters as much as physical ability and football intelligence, and teammates respond when they see their quarterback putting himself at risk.

Career record

Mahomes is one of five quarterbacks in history to win three or more Super Bowls as a starter. He is a two-time league MVP, a three-time Super Bowl MVP, and holds NFL records for single-season quarterback yards (5,608) and career passing yards per game (285.2). From 2018 to 2024, the Chiefs reached seven straight AFC Championship Games. Last season they missed the playoffs for the first time since 2014. This weekend they face the Denver Broncos.
