Ukraine's Mahuchikh claims third European high jump title
Ukrainian athlete Yaroslava Mahuchikh won her third European high jump title in Birmingham, clearing 1.97 metres. Other gold medals at the championships went to athletes from Britain, Italy, Norway, Ireland, Sweden and the Netherlands.
Ukrainian athlete Yaroslava Mahuchikh won the European Athletics Championships high jump in Birmingham on Saturday, securing her third career European title. She sealed victory by clearing 1.97 metres, then made three unsuccessful attempts at 2.01 metres. Poland's Maria Zodzik and Montenegro's Marija Vukovic shared second and third place, both clearing 1.95 metres but failing at 1.97.
Other results
British teams won both the men's and women's 4x100m relays. The British women crossed the line in 42.05 seconds, finishing more than a second ahead of the Swiss team; for one of the British sprinters it was her third gold of the championships. The British men's quartet won in 38.45 seconds.
In the men's triple jump, an Italian athlete took gold after setting a new national record with a jump of 18.15 metres. In the women's 400m, a Norwegian runner won in 49.04 seconds, claiming her first-ever European title. An Irish athlete won the heptathlon gold, setting a new Irish record in the process.
Among the endurance events, a Swedish runner won the 10,000m, while a Dutch athlete was fastest in the 1500m. It was previously reported that Latvia's Patriks Gailums won bronze in the javelin. Latvia is represented at the championships by several other athletes across javelin, pole vault, sprinting and race walking. The European Championships in Birmingham conclude on Sunday.
