42,011 Persons with Poor Status in Latvia at End of May; Numbers Unchanged

At the end of May, Latvia had 42,011 persons with poor status and 18,085 with low-income status, the same numbers as in April. Income thresholds for 2026 have also been published.

According to data from the Ministry of Welfare, at the end of May this year, Latvia recorded 42,011 persons with the status of a poor person. This number is identical to the figure at the end of April. Meanwhile, 18,085 people held the status of a low-income person, also unchanged from the previous month.

The income threshold for a poor household in 2026 is set at 50% of the median income. For the first or only person in the household, it is 425 euros, and for other persons – 298 euros. The threshold for a low-income household is determined by each municipality, but it cannot exceed 80% of the median and cannot be lower than the poor household threshold. The maximum low-income household threshold in 2026 is 680 euros for the first person and 476 euros for others.
