According to data from the Ministry of Welfare, at the end of May this year there were 42,011 people in Latvia with the status of a needy person (trūcīga persona). This number remained the same as at the end of April. Additionally, 18,085 people held the status of a low-income person (maznodrošināta persona), also unchanged.

The income threshold for a needy household is set at 50% of median income. In 2026, this threshold is 425 euros for the first or only person in the household, and 298 euros for each additional person. For low-income households, each municipality sets its own threshold, but it cannot exceed 80% of the median. The maximum threshold this year is 680 euros for the first person and 476 euros for others.
