Maive Rute: I am ready to enter debates with Ülle Madise
Maive Rute, a former European Commission official, has emerged as a potential candidate in Estonia's presidential election, stating she is prepared to debate with other candidates like Ülle Madise.
Maive Rute, who has worked for the European Commission for many years, has announced that she is considering running for the presidency of Estonia. She revealed that her decision came after current President Alar Karis said he would not seek a second term. Rute said she has contacted several major parties, including the Reform Party, Social Democrats, Eesti 200, the Centre Party, and Isamaa.
She described her worldview as centrist, slightly to the right, and highlighted three main challenges facing Estonia: reviving the economy, restoring optimism and national pride, and security. Rute noted that her experience at the European Commission and work with international partners, including the US, France, Germany, and Poland, would be useful in the presidential role.
Rute stated she is not afraid of potential competition with current Chancellor of Justice Ülle Madise and is ready to debate her on the country's future challenges. She also commented on recent polarizing issues in society, such as the Rannarootsi meat factory advertisement and the status of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, expressing that the first was a poorly executed campaign while the latter is a broader question about community belonging.
