Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid set a new record in the National Hockey League (NHL), North America's top professional ice hockey league. He became the first player in league history to record at least one assist in each of the first 13 games of a season. He had two assists in Edmonton's 4-0 win over the Calgary Flames.

McDavid's record

The previous mark of 12 games was shared by Sebastian Aho, Ken Linseman and Wayne Gretzky. McDavid has 36 points this season and leads the league in scoring. The Oilers' record is now 9-2-2. It was Edmonton's first shutout of Calgary since December 2018.

In the Battle of Alberta, goals came from Mathieu Joseph, Mattias Ekholm, Kasperi Kapanen and Alex Formenton. Goaltender Tristan Jarry stopped all 24 shots. Calgary lost goaltender Devin Cooley at the end of the first period, when he was hurt after a collision with Colton Dach in the crease. Cooley had made eight saves, and replacement Dustin Wolf made 20.

Burns and other games

Colorado Avalanche defenseman Brent Burns recorded two assists in a 5-2 home win over the New Jersey Devils and reached 950 career NHL points. He passed Erik Karlsson and Chris Chelios and moved into tenth place among defensemen in league history. Since turning 40, Burns has collected 47 points, which ties him with Al Stanley for fifth place among defensemen in that age group. Colorado ended the visitors' four-game winning streak.

The Washington Capitals beat the Philadelphia Flyers 5-2. Alex Tuch scored twice and now has nine goals in his first 11 games with the club. Only Dino Ciccarelli has started as productively in team history, with 12 goals in his first 11 games. It was Tuch's fourth two-goal game of the season, matching Leon Draisaitl for the league lead.
