French President Emmanuel Macron has made a visit to Spain, a trip that analysts say reflects wider shifts underway in Europe's political and geoeconomic landscape. Discussing the visit with France 24, Spain-based political scientist Carlos Mascarell Vilar offered his perspective on the significance of the trip.

According to Mascarell Vilar, the visit should be understood through several lenses: the distribution of power across Europe, political legacy, and geoeconomics. France and Spain are currently working to reinforce their bilateral relationship at a time when the internal balance of power within Europe is changing rapidly.

The rising weight of eastern Europe

A key driver behind these shifts is the growing influence of eastern European countries, Poland among them, within European politics. This trend is putting pressure on traditional western European powers to reassess their own standing and alliances within the bloc.

The Madrid-Paris axis and defence cooperation

Mascarell Vilar notes that, for Macron, strengthening the Madrid-Paris axis fits into a broader strategy of advancing European defence capabilities and strategic sovereignty. This suggests the bilateral cooperation between France and Spain is being framed not merely as a regional partnership, but as part of wider European security efforts, at a moment when the continent's political attention and centres of influence are gradually moving eastward.
