Macron wins Trump over at G7 on Ukraine, but relations remain fragile
French President Emmanuel Macron temporarily convinced U.S. President Donald Trump at the G7 summit to offer conditional support to Ukraine, while also discussing Iran and Russia sanctions.

At the G7 summit in France, French President Emmanuel Macron managed to persuade U.S. President Donald Trump to support Ukraine, though the agreement was temporary. Trump extended an olive branch to Ukraine with conditions, which left EU leaders more upbeat on the second day of the summit.
Meanwhile, Trump hinted that the U.S. could resume oil sanctions on Russia as G7 countries increased pressure on the Kremlin to end the war in Ukraine. Leaders used the summit to kickstart efforts to conclude the conflict.
Additionally, European allies stated they are ready to help in Iran, but Trump emphasized that Iran must show it has a solid deal. The president this week stressed the need to clear mines from the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic shipping lane.
