Macron: Russian hybrid attacks on Europe are intensifying

French President Emmanuel Macron said following a closed meeting at the Élysée Palace with the main presidential contenders or their representatives that the character of Russian aggression toward Europe is shifting and intensifying, Euronews reports.

As an example, Macron cited the discovery this summer of an explosive-laden drone at Leipzig airport. He stressed that France is not intimidated, noting that the question of Europe's security today and tomorrow is being decided in Ukraine.

Macron said he had ordered the preparation of a plan to protect critical infrastructure in light of growing Russian hybrid attacks. He also emphasized the need to keep sending clear signals to Russia while avoiding direct military confrontation with the country.

Fuel prices also on the agenda

The second topic Macron raised at the closed-door meeting was the sharp rise in fuel prices. The French president announced his intention to convene a G7 leaders' meeting focused on energy issues.

According to Macron, a G7 meeting dedicated to these energy questions will take place in the coming weeks, aimed both at strengthening cooperation and avoiding unnecessary tension between G7 countries and their main partners. The meeting will also offer an opportunity to consider options for possibly releasing or unblocking strategic reserves.
