Macron to urge Trump toward 'right decisions' on Ukraine at Monday meeting

French President Emmanuel Macron will meet US President Donald Trump in New York on Monday, September 21, intending to openly urge him toward "the right decisions" regarding the Russia-Ukraine war. The report comes from television channel BFMTV, citing sources close to the French president.

According to these sources, Macron wants to speak candidly with the American president and steer him toward increasing support for Ukraine while intensifying pressure on Russia. Representatives close to Macron said the meeting offers a good opportunity to set the tone ahead of the UN General Assembly's high-level week and to discuss matters openly with the US president, as is customary for the French leader.

The sources added that, as in all critical moments, this meeting will be an opportunity to steer Trump toward the right decisions, particularly regarding Ukraine, to continue efforts to support Ukraine, and to increase pressure on Russia.

Meeting schedule

The meeting between the two presidents is scheduled for 5:35 PM New York time (00:35 Kyiv time), ahead of the opening of the UN General Assembly. During his US visit, Macron also plans to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

According to sources, Zelensky is expected to meet with Trump on September 22 in New York. During a phone call on September 20, Zelensky and Trump agreed to hold an in-person meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

According to Axios, during the call Trump urged Zelensky to have Ukraine stop striking Russian oil refineries. Separately, on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated that Russia has lost control over its oil refining industry and called on Russia to end the "endless war" against Ukraine.
