French President Emmanuel Macron revealed in an interview with France 2 television that US President Donald Trump’s stance on the war in Ukraine shifted following the G7 summit held in France from July 15 to 17.
According to Macron, Trump arrived at the summit believing that Ukraine was losing the war. However, during the event, he changed his opinion. “He saw that Russia is not fulfilling its obligations. There truly was a change in attitude at this G7 summit,” the French leader said.
Information obtained by the political publication Politico suggests that Trump’s change of position may have been influenced by photographs shown by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during the summit. The images depicted the burning Kyiv Pechersk Lavra complex after a Russian attack on the night of June 15. Sources indicate that this move contributed to Trump agreeing to criticism of Russia in the summit’s final declaration.
Politico also reported that the summit’s positive outcome was aided by the fact that Trump’s interlocutors, including Macron, discussed the Ukrainian issue by portraying Ukraine as a winner on the battlefield. This approach resonated with the US president, who favors demonstrations of strength.
Macron emphasized that these changes are significant and demonstrate that the international community can influence Trump’s perception of the conflict in Ukraine.
