Macron: Trump initially thought Ukraine would lose, but changed his mind after G7 summit
French President Emmanuel Macron said that US President Donald Trump initially believed Ukraine would lose the war, but changed his view following the G7 summit.

French President Emmanuel Macron revealed in an interview with France 2 that US President Donald Trump arrived at the G7 summit thinking Ukraine would lose the war. However, after the summit, Trump changed his mind. Macron also noted that Trump observed Russia was not fulfilling its commitments.
During the summit, G7 leaders issued a joint statement expressing readiness to consider granting Ukraine licenses to produce interceptor missiles directly on Ukrainian territory.
After the summit, Trump stated he had "very good conversations" with Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy, saying both wanted to end the war but did not know how. Trump also suggested the possibility of reinstating sanctions on Russian oil after the US had introduced an exemption due to high global energy prices caused by the war with Iran.
