Man City fans grapple with guilty verdict in financial rules case

Manchester City have been found guilty of the majority of the 115 financial rule breaches they were charged with by the Premier League, according to information that emerged on Friday. The charges, first brought in February 2023, relate to alleged breaches between 2009 and 2018 — a period during which the club won three Premier League titles, including their first in 2011-12, one FA Cup and three EFL Cups.

City have consistently denied any wrongdoing, and BBC Sport has been told the club intends to appeal should the guilty finding be confirmed. Possible sanctions being discussed include a points deduction, financial penalties, or even expulsion from the Premier League.

Fans caught between pride and doubt

Supporters reacted with a mix of shock and disbelief. David Mooney of the Blue Moon podcast told BBC Radio 5 Live he was still processing the news, expecting disappointment to set in over time, and noted the situation raises questions about how fans should view the club's decade of success.

Another supporter, Matt, described the emotional toll escalating over recent hours but said fans would keep supporting the club regardless of any titles or points that might be stripped away.

From lower-league days to European glory

Long-time fans recalled watching City in the old Division Two, facing opponents such as York City and Oldham Athletic before their promotion via the play-offs at the end of the 1998-99 season. Today the club fields striker Erling Haaland, who reached 100 Premier League goals faster than any player in history, and sits top of the table after five league games this season.

Supporters also pointed to City's 2023 Champions League final win over Inter Milan in Istanbul as a memory nothing can take away, while several said they wanted an explanation for why the process took so long to conclude.
