Man City break British transfer record to sign Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea

Manchester City completed the signing of Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea in the closing hours of the transfer window, paying a joint-British record £125m. The deal brought an end to a 79-day saga that included strict deadlines and the backdrop of the acrimonious appointment of Enzo Maresca as City's new manager.

This is the second time this summer City have broken their club transfer record, following the £116m arrival of Elliot Anderson. Fernandez becomes the first player in history to transfer for more than £100m twice, having joined Chelsea from Benfica for £107m in 2023. He also joins Alan Shearer and Rio Ferdinand as the only players to break the British transfer record on two occasions during the Premier League era.

Maresca was the driving force behind the move, eager to reunite with his former Chelsea captain. The Italian boss wanted a player he can trust and who already understands his system. He had used a similar approach when he signed Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall after working with him at Leicester.

City's need for a midfielder became urgent after losing Bernardo Silva, John Stones and Rodri this summer. In the opening match against Bournemouth, Maresca deployed centre-back Marc Guehi in a holding role, a move that surprised even the player. That was because a deal for Ayyoub Bouaddi had not been completed.

Fernandez's arrival adds proven big-game quality. He helped Argentina win the 2022 World Cup and reach another final in July. City hope he can be the final piece for a challenge on all four fronts, after they only managed a domestic cup double last season.

Chelsea, meanwhile, raised over £425m in player sales this summer, with loan fees expected to push that closer to £500m. They initially indicated no direct replacement would be signed, but late on deadline day they agreed a £47m deal for Monaco's Lamine Camara. However, Monaco pulled out after renegotiating Folarin Balogun's sale to Everton. Despite being left without a replacement, Chelsea allowed Fernandez to join City.

The transfer also matches the £125m Liverpool paid Newcastle for Alexander Isak on the same day last summer.
