Manchester City sign Argentina international goalkeeper Rulli

Manchester City have acquired Argentina international goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli, 34, from French club Marseille for a fee of two million euros.

Rulli has earned eight caps for Argentina and was part of the national team during both their 2022 World Cup and 2024 Copa America triumphs. He was also included in Argentina's squad at this year's World Cup, though he did not take the field. Following the final defeat to Spain, he was involved in a clash with opposing defender Eric Garcia, and FIFA has since opened an investigation into the incident.

Extensive club career

Before joining Marseille, Rulli played for Dutch side Ajax as well as Spanish clubs Villarreal and Real Sociedad. He won the UEFA Europa League with Villarreal in 2021, scoring his own penalty in the decisive shootout before saving a spot-kick from Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea to seal victory for his team.

Rulli is no stranger to Manchester City, having previously spent the 2016/17 season at the club, although he never appeared in an official match for them.

Backup role behind Donnarumma

He is expected to serve as City's second-choice goalkeeper next season, behind Gianluigi Donnarumma. The position opened up after City sold James Trafford to Leeds for 45 million pounds, reportedly the largest fee ever paid for a British goalkeeper.
