Manchester City open talks with Liverpool over Gakpo move

Manchester City have opened talks with Liverpool regarding a possible transfer of Dutch forward Cody Gakpo, according to reports. The discussions are taking place late in the summer transfer window, meaning Liverpool will need to carefully consider the situation before deciding whether to sanction any move.

Gakpo is regarded at Anfield as a proven, multi-functional Premier League attacker, having already contributed a goal and an assist in Liverpool's first two matches of the season. Still, the understanding throughout the summer has been that if Liverpool succeeded in signing the attacking reinforcements they wanted, they would not block Gakpo from leaving should a strong offer arrive.

Rising competition up front

With the signing of Victor Munoz, the emergence of Rio Ngumoha, and Barcola's expected arrival from PSG, Gakpo is reportedly aware he may no longer be a guaranteed starter. As a result, a departure would not come as a shock.

Financially, a deal would represent a significant profit for Liverpool, who are said to be seeking around £85m for a player they signed from PSV Eindhoven for £35m after the 2022 World Cup.

However, Liverpool are currently dealing with serious injury issues in attack. Hugo Ekitike is sidelined until 2027 following a ruptured Achilles tendon, while Alexander Isak continues to struggle with fitness problems. That makes letting Gakpo leave a considerable gamble for the club.
