Man City's £80m Gakpo deal edges toward collapse
Manchester City's proposed £80m move for Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo appears close to falling through, with Liverpool now leaning toward keeping him as they weigh alternative wingers.
Manchester City's attempt to sign Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo for around £80m appears to be breaking down. The two clubs had opened talks over the Netherlands international, with Liverpool prepared to let him go only if a suitable replacement could be found.
On Monday, Liverpool completed a deal to sign France forward Bradley Barcola from Paris St-Germain for a fee that could reach £123m. Even so, losing Gakpo would leave Liverpool needing another attacking option.
The Anfield club had explored moves for Brighton winger Yankuba Minteh and Crystal Palace's Ismaila Sarr, but negotiations over both players' valuations have stalled.
As a result, Liverpool are now expected to hold on to the 27-year-old Gakpo unless they can quickly resurrect a deal for another winger before Tuesday's transfer deadline.
Meanwhile, Manchester City have been tracking Everton forward Iliman Ndiaye and may now turn their attention to him following the latest twist in the Gakpo situation. The 26-year-old Senegal international had been expected to move to Tottenham, but City's continued interest suggests the Etihad club could push forward with a possible move for him instead.
