Manchester United's attempt to sign Ederson from Serie A side Atalanta has hit a snag. The clubs agreed a £35m fee for the Brazilian midfielder on 2 June, with plans for a medical in early July to complete the transfer before pre-season. However, that plan was scrapped when the 27-year-old received a late call-up to Carlo Ancelotti's World Cup squad. It was expected Ederson would have his medical after Brazil's elimination, and United sources privately confirmed this when reports of the deal collapsing surfaced last weekend. Brazil were subsequently knocked out by Norway. Despite Chelsea's Andrey Santos and former Leeds goalkeeper Karl Darlow closing in on their United moves, with agreements reached in the past 48 hours, there has been no update on Ederson. Sources have said medical tests revealed an issue, with one telling BBC Sport the deal is off. However, sources at both clubs deny that and say no decision has been made. Ederson is believed to be still in the United States. If the transfer falls through, it would be another setback for United after a difficult summer. Having finished third last season, United prioritised strengthening their defence for a Champions League return. However, hopes of signing first-choice Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest ended when his fee rose to £116m. They then targeted Mateus Fernandes, but a change of leadership at West Ham reduced their need to sell, and when Tottenham showed interest, the final price of £85m was far from the anticipated fee. United offered the same amount but with add-ons, and Fernandes chose Tottenham. In theory, Ederson had at least been signed by then, meaning some recruitment was in place before this week's deals for Santos and Darlow. Now fans are in limbo waiting to see if the Ederson deal goes through.
