Manchester United lose to promoted side in season opener for first time since 1974

Hull City beat Manchester United 2:0 at home in the opening match of the English top flight season, United's first such defeat since 1974.

Hull City created several dangerous moments against Manchester United from the very start of the match. In the 13th minute, Bryan Mbeumo tested the home goalkeeper with an aerial shot, but it was saved. Soon after, Oliver McBurnie missed a big chance as his header was saved by goalkeeper Senne Lammens, but in the 17th minute the hosts took the lead – Semi Ajayi converted a rebound after a corner kick.

Manchester United's situation worsened when Patrick Dorgu received a yellow card in the 34th minute. Four minutes later, Hull City doubled their lead as Nobels Mendy headed in a free kick taken by Regan Slater. Before halftime, Hull City's Matt Crooks also received a yellow card, but the score remained unchanged until the break.

Second half and the finish

In the second half, Manchester United made several substitutions in an attempt to change the course of the game, bringing on Rashford, Dalot, Mainoo and Šeško. Hull City also made several changes, including replacing injured captain Coyle.

In the 79th minute, the visitors created a dangerous attack when Mbeumo's shot to the far corner was saved by goalkeeper Tzolakis. Late in the match, Hull City also threatened the visitors' goal, but the shot went wide. In stoppage time, Millar received a yellow card, and the referee ended the match shortly after.

With this defeat, Manchester United opened a season with a loss to a promoted top-flight side for the first time in club history since 1974. In the previous 13 such matches, the club had won 10 and drawn three.
