Manfelds finishes seventh at European Judo Junior Championships

Latvian judoka Tomass Manfelds took a shared seventh place at the European Junior Championships in Podgorica in the under-90kg category. Other Latvian athletes had more modest results.

Latvian judoka Tomass Manfelds secured a shared seventh place on Saturday at the European Junior Championships in Podgorica, Montenegro, competing in the under-90 kilogram weight category.

Manfelds received a bye in the first round, then defeated Moldova's Emilian Melnic in the second round. In the sub-group semifinal, however, he lost to Germany's Konstantin Distel. He continued in the repechage tournament, where after another bye in the opening round he defeated Lithuania's Davidas Chačaturjanas and Turkey's Emir Ari. In the fourth repechage bout he lost to Serbia's Boris Rutović, finishing one win short of a chance to fight for bronze.

Other Latvian results

In the same under-90kg category, Arturs Jacenko lost his opening bout. In the under-100kg category, Ņikita Afanasjevs failed to get past the first round.

On Friday, other Latvian athletes also competed. Ņikita Čeladins, competing in the under-81kg category, lost in the first round of the repechage. First-round losses were also recorded by Aleksandrs Avdejevs (under-81kg), Maksims Bulajevs (under-73kg) and Sofija Ponomarjova (under-70kg).

The European Junior Judo Championships in Podgorica, Montenegro, conclude on Saturday.
