Manuel Neuer, the long-standing goalkeeper for the German national team, has decided to end his international career. The 40-year-old made the decision after Germany's elimination from the World Cup at the hands of Paraguay in a penalty shootout in the round of 16.

Neuer started the match as the first-choice goalkeeper but could not prevent the team's early exit. This was his fifth World Cup tournament, and he was part of the German squad that won the title in 2014.

Earlier, Neuer had announced his retirement from the national team after the 2024 European Championship, but head coach Julian Nagelsmann persuaded him to return as the primary goalkeeper for the World Cup.

In total, Neuer has earned 128 caps for Germany. He will continue playing for his club, Bayern Munich, with whom he still has a contract for the upcoming season.
