Parasports Marcinkēvičs and Tērauda reach quarterfinals of Liepāja showdow tournament
Latvian parasports athletes Rihards Marcinkēvičs and Aigija Tērauda secured spots in the quarterfinals of the showdow tournament in Liepāja on Friday. Marcinkēvičs won all five matches in Group B, while Tērauda won two matches and finished second in Group A.
The showdow tournament in Liepāja continued on Friday with group stage matches. Latvian parasports athletes Rihards Marcinkēvičs and Aigija Tērauda advanced to the quarterfinals. Marcinkēvičs won all five matches in Group B, taking first place, and then added three wins in the competition for positions 1–16. Tērauda secured two wins on Friday in the women's Group A, finishing with three wins in five matches, placing second and qualifying for the quarterfinals.
Other Latvian competitors: Artūrs Korjaks finished fourth in Group C with a 2–3 record, won one match in the top-16 bracket, and will play for 9th–12th place on Saturday. Nikolajs Osipovs placed fourth in Group D with two wins (1 on Friday), also won one match in the top-16, and will compete for 9th–12th. Mārtiņš Allis ended fifth in Group A with one win in five matches, then started the 17th–24th place bracket with a victory.
In the women's competition, Viktorija Dukaļska and Alisa Mālere lost all their matches in both the group stage and the 9th–12th place bracket. Saturday will feature elimination rounds and medal matches. This year's tournament includes participants from 11 countries.
Showdow is a sport designed for visually impaired individuals. It serves as physical rehabilitation, improving spatial orientation, balance, coordination, and hearing. It also enhances mental and psychological stability, generates positive emotions, boosts self-confidence, strengthens health, and helps maintain physical fitness.
