Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg has acquired the historic Strancally Castle in Ireland, a 19th-century estate that comes with 440 acres of grounds. The purchase is estimated to have cost between $23 million and $35 million.

A spokesperson said Zuckerberg and his family are excited to continue caring for the historic home and look forward to spending time in Ireland, where Meta maintains its international headquarters. Meta has not yet provided further comment on the purchase.

The estate sits on a river, surrounded by greenery. According to a 2001 report by the Irish Times, the property includes at least 11 bedrooms, four tower suites, a library, a dining room and a drawing room. Zuckerberg bought the castle from a financier who had lived there with his family for 25 years.

Meta's international headquarters is located in Dublin, where the company opened a 31,000-square-foot data center in 2017, about 20 minutes from the city center. The newly purchased castle is in Waterford, roughly a two-hour drive from Dublin.

Part of a broader spending spree

This is not Zuckerberg's only major real estate purchase this year. He and his wife reportedly also spent $170 million on a home in the same exclusive Miami neighborhood as Jeff Bezos, joining a number of tech billionaires who have been leaving California as the state moves toward implementing a form of wealth tax.
