Mark Lajal beats former world No. 7 at Saint-Tropez tournament
Estonia's top tennis player Mark Lajal defeated Belgian David Goffin, once ranked seventh in the world, in straight sets in the first round of the ATP Challenger tournament in Saint-Tropez.
Estonia's number one tennis player Mark Lajal (ATP No. 143) opened his campaign at the ATP Challenger tournament in Saint-Tropez, France, with a first-round win over Belgium's David Goffin.
Seeded seventh at the tournament, Lajal faced Goffin, who currently sits at No. 390 in the world rankings but reached as high as No. 7 nine years ago at the peak of his career.
In the first set, Lajal broke serve in the fourth game and went on to win 6:3.
He opened the second set with a break as well, but his opponent immediately broke back in the following game. Both players then held serve comfortably until Lajal broke again in the ninth game to close out the set 6:4.
In the next round, Lajal will face the winner of the all-French matchup between Thomas Faurel (ATP No. 340) and Hugo Grenier (ATP No. 289).
Estonia's second-ranked player, Daniil Glinka (ATP No. 173), is also competing in the tournament and will play France's Daniel Jade in the first round on Tuesday.
