Marcus Rashford's Manchester United Future: Stay or Go?
At 28, England forward Marcus Rashford returns to Manchester United after a loan spell at Barcelona, but the club refuses to sell at a reduced price. His high wages limit potential buyers, making a stay at United the most likely outcome.
England international Marcus Rashford is taking a three-week break after helping the Three Lions secure third place at the World Cup. The 28-year-old forward posted on social media that he wants to rest, reflect, and come back as a better version of himself. That reflection likely includes his club future.
Rashford spent last season on loan at Barcelona, winning La Liga. The Catalan club had an option to buy him for £26m, which expired in mid-June without being activated. Another clause allowing other clubs (except Liverpool and Manchester City) to sign him for £40m also lapsed in July. Sources close to the player said it was illogical to expect a higher offer than Barcelona would have paid.
New Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick, a former teammate and briefly manager of Rashford, has been conciliatory in his public comments. However, previous coach Ruben Amorim fell out with the player, exiling him and prompting a loan to Aston Villa. Carrick has not yet stated his position on Rashford's return.
United are adamant they will not renegotiate a deal with Barcelona on reduced terms or consider another loan. It is unclear how much interest exists in Spain, with Barcelona already signing Anthony Gordon and close to adding Karim Adeyemi. The club's financial discipline means they refused to pay £116m for Elliot Anderson or £85m for Mateus Fernandes.
Rashford earns £325,000 a week, making him United's top earner. Few clubs globally can match that salary, and the player is unwilling to jeopardize his England place by moving to certain Premier League clubs. Therefore, when the transfer window closes on September 1, he is most likely to remain at Old Trafford.
Rashford's friend, Wrexham striker Sam Smith, expressed hope that he would return and prove his quality. But former United captain Gary Neville believes Rashford's time at the club is over and reconciliation is not on the cards.
