Marcus Grönholm open to WRC return — but as a team boss, not a driver
Former two-time WRC world champion Marcus Grönholm has said he would consider returning to rallying as a team manager if offered the chance, while his future plans also involve son Niklas's rallycross ambitions.
Finnish rally legend Marcus Grönholm, 58, who ended his full-time WRC career back in 2007, revealed on the "WRC Backstories" podcast that he would not rule out a return to the World Rally Championship — not as a driver, but in a team management role.
Asked what he would still like to achieve in motorsport, Grönholm himself raised the idea of becoming a team boss. He said he would consider such an offer if it came, noting the travel involved with the role, though he added that a team manager travels less than a driver does.
Grönholm confirmed he has not yet received any concrete offer, but he is open to the possibility. His career includes two WRC world titles and 30 rally wins, along with experience managing a team in the World Rallycross Championship, where he handled finances and sponsorship matters. He said he enjoyed running a team, though the hardest part was securing funding whenever the budget ran out before the season ended.
Plans tied to his son's career
Grönholm's future plans are also linked to the career of his son, Niklas Grönholm. While Niklas has been competing in the Finnish Rally Championship this season, the family has not given up on bigger rallycross ambitions. Marcus Grönholm said the family still dreams of getting Niklas a car capable of winning a title should the World Rallycross Championship return.
