The arrests followed a social media campaign that encouraged people to gather near the border and attempt to push through into Ceuta. The online call to action emerged only weeks after a number of migrants died while trying to make the same crossing, underscoring the recurring dangers associated with attempts to reach the enclave.
Ceuta, along with the nearby enclave of Melilla, has long served as one of the main entry points for migrants seeking to reach European Union territory, since both cities share Europe's only land borders with the African continent. Security along these borders is tight, and crossing attempts often involve serious risks, including crowd crush and dangerous conditions at fences and in coastal waters.
Social media has increasingly played a role in organising such crossing attempts in recent years. Calls circulated online can quickly mobilise large numbers of people, putting additional pressure on border forces and heightening the likelihood of accidents or fatalities during mass crossing attempts.
No casualties have so far been reported in connection with this latest attempt, but the incident again highlights the challenges facing authorities in managing migration flows through the region and the risks posed by large, unregulated crowd movements toward heavily guarded borders.
