Investigation completed into attempted murder of two people in Mārupe; woman remanded in custody

Latvian police have completed an investigation into the poisoning of two people with medication in Mārupe last December. A woman born in 1981 has been remanded in custody, and the case has been sent to the Pierīga prosecutor's office.

The State Police has completed an investigation into a criminal case concerning an attempted murder of two people in Mārupe. The investigation was concluded on 22 July this year, and the case materials have been forwarded to the Pierīga prosecutor's office to decide on bringing charges.

According to the police, the incident occurred on 8 December 2025. A woman born in 1981 poisoned her son and her civil partner using medication. She then attempted to take her own life by also using medication. During the pre-trial investigation, evidence was collected and the woman was recognised as a suspect; she was ordered to be held in custody.

The investigation was carried out by officers from the 1st Unit of the 1st Bureau of the Criminal Police Department of the State Police Riga Regional Administration. The criminal case was opened under Section 15(4) and Section 118(2) of the Criminal Law, which concern attempted murder. The offence carries a penalty of life imprisonment or imprisonment for 15 to 20 years, along with probation supervision for up to three years, with or without confiscation of property.

The State Police has reminded that everyone is presumed innocent until their guilt is proven in accordance with the law.
