In Latvia, a woman named Vita made a painful decision a couple of weeks ago: she placed her sister, who has rapidly progressing dementia, in a care home. The story was published by the news portal TVNET. The sister is 64 years old, and because of the dementia, looking after her at home is no longer enough.
Roles have reversed
Vita is 12 years younger than her sister. In childhood the older sister always looked after her, as an elder sibling usually does. Now the roles have changed, and Vita is the one caring for her sister.
A care home with a different name
The facility where the sister now lives is officially called a social rehabilitation hotel. That is also how Vita described it to her sister, telling her she was going to a hotel. Reviews of the place are said to be good.
Still, Vita is not certain. She admits one can never know whether the choice was right, and she does not know what other option there could have been, or whether there was one at all. Since taking her sister there, Vita says she still cannot sleep at night.
The story shows the doubts faced by people who must decide whether to place a relative in a care facility when home care is no longer possible.
