New Moscow Metro station unveiled with 'special military operation' imagery
A newly opened section of the Moscow Metro includes a station decorated with symbols and inscriptions referencing Russia's 'special military operation' in Ukraine. Vladimir Putin attended the launch.
On September 5, Moscow opened the first section of the new Rublyovo-Arkhangelskaya Line, which becomes the 17th line in the city's metro system. The launch ceremony was attended by Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The new section comprises five stations: Delovoy Tsentr and Shelepikha, both previously part of the Big Circle Line, along with Zvenigorodskaya, Narodnoye Opolcheniye, and Bulvar Generala Karbysheva.
The last of these stations stands out for design elements tied to Russia's war in Ukraine. Above the stairs at one exit, an inscription reads "Engineer Troops," with "Special Military Operation" — the Kremlin's official term for its invasion of Ukraine — displayed beneath it.
Inside the station, wall bas-reliefs feature the abbreviation "SVO," a badge for "Honorary Specialist of the Engineer Troops," and images depicting drones, military equipment, and uniforms.
The new station illustrates how imagery related to the war has been incorporated into public infrastructure in Russia, including newly built facilities intended for everyday use by residents.
