Civilian air traffic has effectively been shut out of the airspace over central and western regions of European Russia. The cause is a large-scale attack by unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones, according to the Ukrainian outlet Ukrainska Pravda. The attack comes amid Russia's ongoing war against Ukraine.

The outlet reports that a kind of drone-restricted zone has formed over these regions for civilian aviation. In practice, this means civilian flights are not operating in the affected area.

All four Moscow airports have completely halted their work. Moscow is Russia's capital and the country's largest air travel hub, so closing every one of its airports affects passenger flows.

The source gives no further details on the number of drones, the targets, any damage, or how long the restrictions will remain in place. These details have not yet been confirmed.
