Mateta's contract dispute puts Palace in a transfer bind
Jean-Philippe Mateta is disputing the validity of the final year of his Crystal Palace contract, but neither Fifa nor a Premier League tribunal has ruled in his favour, leaving the club to decide his future with eight days left in the transfer window.
French striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and Crystal Palace are navigating a tense chapter in their relationship, with the player arguing that the last year of his contract should not be legally binding, since it stemmed from an extension option the club activated on his original four-and-a-half-year deal. The dispute has been taken to both Fifa and a Premier League independent tribunal.
Days before Palace's season-opening match against Everton, Fifa ruled the matter fell outside its jurisdiction. Although the outcome of the Premier League tribunal has not been officially confirmed, the fact that Mateta remains under contract suggests the ruling did not favour him. From Palace's side, the matter is now considered settled.
Mateta played 63 minutes for Palace on Saturday, suggesting the relationship has not been irreparably damaged. The 29-year-old has previously shown he can win back favour at Selhurst Park - after a knee injury derailed a potential move to AC Milan, he was routinely booed by fans in the second half of last season, only to become a hero in May by scoring the winning goal in Palace's Uefa Conference League final victory over Rayo Vallecano.
Employment lawyer Libby Payne said it is possible to argue that such option terms are inherently unfair and therefore void, though the bar for success in such cases is high and challenges rarely prevail.
With eight days remaining in the transfer window, several clubs are said to be interested in Mateta, including Aston Villa, where Ollie Watkins' own future is uncertain. Mateta still has 10 months left on his deal - meaning this window is Palace's last chance to recoup a transfer fee before he becomes eligible in January to agree a free move to an overseas club for next season. A free transfer next year, however, could prove more financially rewarding for Mateta than a paid move now.
Palace have tried repeatedly over the past year to renew Mateta's contract without success. Given the lengths he has gone to in arguing his current deal is invalid, a reversal now seems unlikely. The club is expected to at least consider offers for the striker.
