Real Madrid won 2-1 at Barcelona's Camp Nou in El Clasico, a match in LaLiga, Spain's top football division. Barcelona had won all nine of their previous league games this season. Forward Kylian Mbappe scored both goals for Madrid, who are coached by Jose Mourinho. The result is a warning for Barcelona, coached by Hansi Flick, whose stated aim this season is Champions League success.

Afterwards Mourinho explained that it is hard for attackers to run into space against Barcelona, so the answer is to use midfielders such as Eduardo Camavinga and Jude Bellingham to break their defensive line. Camavinga's run from deep set up the winner. In his first Clasico against Flick's side, Mbappe had been caught offside seven times, the most by any player in a major European league in six years.

Barcelona remain top of the table. They also lost 4-2 to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, and in the past two seasons they have been knocked out of Europe by Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid.

Elsewhere in Europe

Atletico Madrid beat Deportivo A Coruna 1-0 through Argentine Julian Alvarez, who apologised to fans for earlier comments about a dream transfer. Atletico are two points behind Barcelona. In Germany's Bundesliga, Bayern Munich won at Freiburg and are level on points with Borussia Dortmund before their meeting, Der Klassiker, next weekend. In Italy's Serie A, Inter Milan beat Fiorentina 2-1 with a stoppage-time winner, and in the Netherlands Ajax won 2-1 at Sparta Rotterdam, with Nigerian Tolu Arokodare scoring nine goals in his last 11 games.
