In round 9 of Spain's top football league, LaLiga, Madrid club Real Madrid beat Sevilla 4-1 at home and moved up to third place in the table. The club also benefited from a stumble by another Seville side, Real Betis, who lost 5-2 at home to Barcelona.

How the match unfolded

Before this game, Real Madrid won a dramatic Champions League match in Rome 4-3. Two heroes of that win started here: Turkish midfielder Arda Güler, who provided two assists, and Brazilian Endrick, who equalised at 3-3. It was Endrick's first start of the season. Brazilian Vinícius Júnior was absent as he has begun a four-match suspension.

Güler put Real Madrid ahead in the 30th minute with a long-range shot after a counterattack. In the 37th minute Jude Bellingham backheeled a pass to Mbappé, who got past defenders with a pirouette and made it 2-0. In the second half Mbappé added a penalty for 3-0, his ninth league goal of the season. Late on, both sides scored: Djomandé for Real Madrid in the 82nd minute and Bueno for Sevilla in the 80th.

Other results

Real Sociedad of San Sebastián won 5-2 away at Málaga for their third consecutive victory. Mikel Oyarzabal scored twice, and Japan's Takefusa Kubo had a goal and an assist. Málaga, back in the top flight, are still winless, with four draws and five defeats.

Barcelona lead the table with 27 points, Atlético Madrid are second on 22, and Real Madrid have 21. Barcelona's Raphinha tops the scoring chart with 12 goals, and Mbappé is second.
