McInnes backs himself to deliver Rangers success

Rangers manager Derek McInnes has said the squad is still a work in progress but insists he believes he can lead the club to success.

Twelve players have already joined the club this summer, and McInnes hopes to add "a couple more" before next week's transfer deadline, while expecting "one or two" players to depart. He noted the side is missing injured striker Youssef Chermiti, the type of forward capable of stretching opposition defences.

McInnes acknowledged the season has not started the way he wanted, but pointed out he is not the first Rangers manager to face a tough opening spell, adding that ultimately results at the end of the campaign are what matter. He said he remains confident the club will achieve success under his leadership.

Searching for an identity

Following Thursday's match, McInnes expressed frustration that his team lacks a clear playing identity, whether based on possession, counter-attacking or direct football. The former Aberdeen, Hearts, Kilmarnock and St Johnstone manager said his sides have always had a defined identity in the past.

He wants Rangers to put more defensive pressure on opponents, admitting that is not currently the case. McInnes believes the squad has capable ball-playing options but needs to relax more in possession, suggesting one or two further additions could help the team develop.

He also wants the team to be able to play a full-press style, which requires strong aggression, winning second balls and duels, and imposing itself on matches. McInnes concluded by stressing that Rangers' squad is full of talented players, since only talented players make it into the club.
