McLaren wins appeal, Gasly loses Monaco Grand Prix podium

McLaren have successfully appealed the official result of the Monaco Grand Prix, held on 7 June, following a controversy involving several incorrectly applied pit-lane speeding penalties.

As a result of the ruling, Alpine's Pierre Gasly loses the podium finish he had been given after his team successfully overturned two five-second penalties against him. Gasly, who crossed the line third on track, now returns to seventh place, matching the position he held in the original official results.

Red Bull's Isack Hadjar is restored to third place, while McLaren's Oscar Piastri moves back up to fourth.

Root cause and other drivers affected

The ruling does not fully resolve the wider fallout from the pit-lane speeding penalties, which affected the results of numerous drivers across the field, including Mercedes' George Russell.

Russell was dropped out of the points-scoring positions due to a penalty for incorrectly serving a pit-lane speeding penalty — one that he should never have received in the first place. The wave of penalties occurred because Formula 1 had incorrectly measured the length of the pit lane, causing cars' average speeds to be wrongly judged as exceeding the limit.
