Media: Secret Meeting Between European and Russian Representatives on Ending War in Ukraine
According to Bloomberg, an unofficial meeting took place where former European officials discussed ending the war in Ukraine with Russian representatives. Ukraine has downplayed the significance of such talks.
The news agency Bloomberg, citing its sources, reports that a secret meeting was held between European and Russian representatives to discuss ending the war in Ukraine. The European side was represented by former high-ranking officials from the United Kingdom, France, and Germany: Tim Barrow, former UK National Security Adviser; Markus Ederer, former German State Secretary; and Pierre Vimont, a seasoned French diplomat. Bloomberg's sources did not reveal who represented Russia at the meeting.
Officials from the UK, France, Germany, and Russia have not confirmed that such talks took place. Bloomberg notes that former officials and think tanks often engage in informal diplomatic initiatives to explore possible solutions to complex international problems. These meetings are typically private efforts without an official mandate, held in the format of expert discussions. Such so-called track-two meetings aim to exchange ideas that may later be conveyed through government channels.
This is not the first time details have emerged of secret talks involving European and Russian representatives. In July, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev announced that a meeting between German and Russian representatives had taken place on his country's territory, with one of the topics being the end of the war in Ukraine.
Reacting to the information, Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that such talks carry almost no significance in ending the war. The ministry's press secretary noted that Ukraine had not authorized Germany to hold such meetings.
