Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, has arrived in Iran to participate in the farewell ceremony for the country's former Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. Khamenei was killed on February 28 during US and Israeli airstrikes on Tehran.
According to the Russian news agency Interfax, representatives from the Russian Foreign Ministry, the Russian Orthodox Church, and Muslim clergy will also be present at the ceremony.
The mourning event began on Friday in Tehran, with foreign delegations in attendance. Iranian media report that the farewell ceremony will last from July 3 to July 9. Ali Khamenei's burial will take place in his hometown of Mashhad.
Earlier, the first images of the coffin containing the former Iranian Supreme Leader's body appeared on social media.
It is worth recalling that in January 2025, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement, which includes enhanced military cooperation that aids Russia in its war against Ukraine.
On February 28, the United States, together with Israel, launched a military campaign to destroy the terrorist regime in Iran. Within the first 12 hours, US forces carried out nearly 900 strikes on targets in Iran. Late that evening, US President Donald Trump announced that Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was dead. Prior to the attack, the CIA had located Khamenei's position.
