Historic Night in Toronto
On Thursday, the Toronto Tempo put on an offensive clinic, defeating the Sparks 125-97 at home. The star of the night was Meibrija, who tied the WNBA single-game scoring record with 53 points. The record was previously set by Elizabeth Cambage in July 2018 and matched by A'ja Wilson in August 2023.
Stats and Records
Meibrija shot 17-of-28 from the field, including 9-of-18 from three-point range, which also tied a WNBA record for most three-pointers in a game. She made 10 of 12 free throws. Her 53 points also set a new franchise record for the Tempo, surpassing the previous mark of 38 points by Brittney Sykes (achieved twice).
Standings and Latvian Connection
With the win, the Tempo improve to 9-9, sitting in ninth place in the WNBA standings, while the Sparks fall to 8-10 in tenth. Notably, the Tempo, as an expansion team, acquired the rights to Latvian player Kitija Laksa from the Phoenix Mercury in the expansion draft and signed her to a training camp contract. However, a day before the season started, Toronto waived three players, including Laksa.
