Prosecutor General Juris Meisters announced that the criminal proceedings concerning the Rail Baltica project are expected to reach a stage this year where the individuals involved will be identified. The case has been transferred from the Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB) to the Prosecutor General's Office, and the prosecutor is currently reviewing the extensive materials.

According to Meisters, a prosecutor's assessment will soon be made to determine if there is sufficient grounds to grant a person the status of 'person subject to criminal proceedings' and thus the right to defense. If such status is granted, it will allow the person to exercise their defense rights. The prosecutor will also decide whether further investigative or operational measures are needed.

'It is absolutely certain that we must reach this result this year,' Meisters said. However, he added that completing the investigation stage this year is unlikely, but determining procedural statuses is a crucial step forward.
