Latvian music journalist Klāss Vāvere dies in Mexico — new details on his final days emerge
Well-known Latvian music journalist and rock history researcher Klāss Vāvere has died in Mexico after going missing during a mountain hike. His body was found in a body of water after a two-day search.
Klāss Vāvere, one of Latvia's best-known music journalists and pop music commentators, has died in Mexico. New details about the circumstances of his death have now emerged through Mexican media reports.
What happened
According to the Mexican outlet "TV Azteca Bajío", citing local authorities, Vāvere went on a hike in a mountainous area last weekend. During the hike he became separated from the rest of the group and went missing.
A large-scale search operation was launched, involving municipal police, civil defense services, the Red Cross, firefighters and medics. After a two-day search, Vāvere was found dead — his remains were discovered in a body of water.
The official cause of death has not yet been confirmed, and the exact circumstances of what happened are expected to be clarified during the ongoing investigation.
A career spanning decades
For more than four decades, Klāss Vāvere wrote about music for various print and online publications. He also worked as a translator and author, having written the books "101 mūzikas albums vērtīgai kolekcijai" (101 Music Albums for a Valuable Collection) and "Šūpuļdziesmas pieaugušajiem" (Lullabies for Adults), and translated several publications related to rock music.
Vāvere also worked at Radio SWH, where he hosted the program "Šūpuļdziesmas pieaugušajiem". He gained wide recognition for his CD series "Lullabies/Šūpuļdziesmas" and was widely known as a researcher of rock music history.
