Secrets to Growing Blueberries: Tips for a Bountiful Harvest

To grow large, juicy blueberries, it's essential to have acidic soil, proper planting, and multiple varieties. Watering and fertilizing also play key roles in crop quality.

Blueberries are not only delicious and healthy but also relatively easy to grow if certain conditions are met. They are rich in antioxidants, fiber, and vitamin C, which boost the immune system, support brain function, and help maintain stable blood pressure. More and more gardeners are choosing to plant blueberry bushes, but success depends on the right location and care.

Choose a sunny or partially shaded spot sheltered from wind. The soil must be acidic, with a pH between 3.5 and 4.4—ordinary garden soil is often too alkaline. Use special rhododendron or peat soil, which can be supplemented with oak leaves or conifer needles. When growing in pots, select a large container and acidic substrate. Planting holes should be wide and deep, with the root ball slightly above ground level to prevent lime absorption during rain.

Although many blueberry varieties are self-pollinating, planting multiple different varieties together yields better results through cross-pollination, leading to more abundant harvests and larger berries.

For spring-planted blueberries, it's recommended to remove flower buds in the first year so the plant focuses on root and leaf development—this results in much richer harvests in subsequent years. To skip this step, plant in autumn so the bush can adapt and produce berries the following summer.

Water with soft water—rainwater or settled tap water with low lime content is ideal. The soil should be evenly moist but not waterlogged. In spring, apply organic fertilizer or a special berry fertilizer. From the age of 4–5 years, prune bushes regularly, removing old, weak, and crossing branches to encourage new growth.

Varieties well-suited to Latvia's climate include 'Bluecrop', 'Pilot', 'Elizabeth', and 'Duke'.
